The Road Construction Project That Threatens Serengeti
Plans to drive major thoroughfare through one of the world’s last great wildlife sanctuaries
Document created 09 July 2010, last updated 27 June 2011
This road would cut across the annual migratory route taken each year by millions of wildebeest and other animals.
Scientists and conservationist say that this will eventually kill the migration, one of the greatest such animal movements on earth. The road will also gravely impact the habitat of endangered species such as black rhino and wild hunting dog.
While the Serengeti is currently on the World Heritage list, the World Heritage Centre and IUCN consider that “if built, the North Road could critically impact the property’s Outstanding Universal Value and justify its inscription on the List of World Heritage in Danger”.
